The Method of Cascades

Deconstructing the experiential process

The method of cascades rests on the following premise:

All human experience and awareness is embedded within an experiential process, the continuous flow of experience, represented as a cascade of intermingled cognitions, physiological arousal and physical action.

Experiential Cascades:

The moment-to-moment pattern of cognitions, emotions, physiological states and physical gestures that act together to produce experiential 'cascades'.

Integrating Across Cascades:

The integration across 'cascades' provides a single unified life stream of biopsychosocial functioning and supports the creation of a sense of self.

Deconstructing the experiential cascade

The flow of experience can be deconstructed analytically via sequential analysis. Features of entire cascades can be obtained from analyses of rough paths and signature analysis.

Integrating across cascades

Dynamic variables obtained from time-ordered data are entered into structural equation models to examine the processes that integrate across experiential cascades to produce macro-level ecosystems.

Instruments

Experiental cascades take input from multiple streams (action, cognition, arousal and brain patterns), hence data is derived from 4 main sources:

  • Virtual reality

  • Medical bracelets

  • Interviews / Surveys

  • fMRI / fNIRS
